about
The first four months of my relationship with my partner, Mary Gauthier, were long-distance. Because neither one of us stayed in one place very often, instead of sending each other postcards or letters, we wrote each other love songs and sent voice memos to each other. This song came out of that burst of inspiration early on in our relationship. I thought it was just a silly love song, but it keeps morphing with more and more life experience. The pandemic has certainly deepened the meaning of this song, as well as the experience I had playing it for the women currently incarcerated in the Gatesville prison located twenty minutes outside of my hometown.

Missing Someone
by Jaimee Harris
Finally calling back all my friends
They’ve been wondering where I’ve been
I went off the deep end
This time it was a good swim
I’ve been running ‘round with someone
Never thought I’d be this fun again
Well, I never woulda thought it had you told me that
We would come together quite like we have
Kinda reads like Kerouac
Crossing country then going back
Back to New York to figure it out
Back to the place I loved you right out loud
Work’s piled up, dishes ain’t done
I’ve been stuck on the telephone
Ain’t been sleeping in my bed, I’d rather be in yours instead
Guess I’ve come a little undone
I’m just missing, I’m just missing someone
I’m looking up at the sky
I’m looking all the time
Is that you circling ‘round
When are you coming down
When’ll I see your face again
When’ll I get to have that skin I’m craving
Work’s piled up, dishes ain’t done
I’ve been stuck on the telephone
Ain’t been sleeping in my bed, I’d rather be in yours instead
Guess I’ve come a little undone
I’m just missing, I’m just missing someone
We tried counting down the days
But our hearts couldn’t take the pain
Ain’t never been so hard living, hard living this way
When I finally get to getting to you, babe, I’m gonna stay
Work’s piled up, dishes ain’t done
I’ve been stuck on the telephone
Ain’t been sleeping in my bed, I’d rather be in yours instead
Guess I’ve come a little undone
I’m just missing, I’m just missing someone
Hey, I’m just missing someone
Hey, I’m just missing someone

“She’s quick to pay homage to her musical heroes but Jaimee Harris is her own person, with her own voice. She’s got a
natural songwriter’s instinct for the hard truths, and a voice that brings them home with a visceral punch. Pay attention.”
